Certification of compliance with the Australian Forestry Standard (AS 4708:2013) and the Chain of Custody Standard (AS 4707:2014) is not carried out by AFS Ltd itself, but by independent third-parties known as accredited certification bodies (for a full listing see Certification Bodies).

Certification bodies also perform annual surveillance audits and periodic re-assessment audits to proactively verify that a certified forest manager or chain of custody certified company maintains compliance with AFS Ltd requirements.

To ensure independence and impartiality, AFS Ltd requires certification bodies to be independent from the standards development process and the entity they are certifying.

JAS-ANZ (the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand) undertakes the accreditation of certification bodies (also known as conformity assessment bodies).
