US publishers commit to Sustainable Forestry Initiative

03-Oct-2012

In news from the United States, Time Inc., the National Geographic Society, Macmillan, and Pearson will partner with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) to help spur the growth of certification to preserve and protect forests. These leading North American publishers will become Founding Partners of the SFI Forest Partners Program, supporting and facilitating forest certification.

Just like the Australian Forest Certification Scheme, SFI is endorsed by the Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). In keeping with the idea of 'Think Globally, Act Locally', PEFC requires that all national standards meet PEFC International's Sustainability Benchmark. To ensure consistency across PEFC-endorsed standards, all national systems will undergo rigorous independent assessment to ensure their compliance with PEFC's Sustainability Benchmark.

The SFI Forest Partners will work collectively with the SFI community to make certification more efficient and accessible by providing resources for activities such as shared consulting expertise, group certification and audit coordination.

While AFS Ltd does not currently operate a partners program of this nature, a number of major certified companies are making a major contribution to the promotion of sustainable forest management through their use of AFS and PEFC logos and by communicating the certification message to customers and stakeholders along their supply chain.
